(YAPHANK, NY): Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. presented the Sheriff’s Office’s newest Corrections K9, Sato, with his official badge during a brief ceremony on Wednesday, May 28.

Sato is a 2-year-old German Shepherd trained in narcotics detection. He is currently assigned to both the Yaphank and Riverhead Correctional Facilities, where he plays a critical role in maintaining safety and security.

“The K9s are important members of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, helping to not only protect our facilities and staff but also serving as a deterrent to those trying to smuggle illicit items into the jails,” said Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr.

Sato received his formal training in Narcotics Detection at the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department. His primary responsibilities include conducting searches of inmate housing units, screening packages, and patrolling during visitation hours.

The Sheriff’s Office will further expand its K9 program with the addition of a fourth Corrections K9 this summer, made possible by a grant from the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA).  For more information about the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office please visit www.SuffolkSheriff.com.
