(Yaphank, NY): On Tuesday, September 1 Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, Jr., was joined by photographer Saskia Keeley and formerly incarcerated individuals to unveil a new Photo Exhibit at the Yaphank Correctional Facility.  Over the summer, 20 incarcerated men placed in the Sheriff’s Addiction Treatment Program participated in a 5-week photography class with photographer Saskia Keeley.

A Part of Me Wants to Be All of Me was a Restorative Photography and Writing Workshop that was held at Yaphank Correctional Facility, where the men incarcerated within the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s Addiction Treatment Program spent five weeks learning portrait photography, writing reflective pieces about their inner lives, and building collages that capture where they’ve been, where they are, and where they hope to go. The exhibit consists of collages and photographs, is equal parts art show and self-portraits.  The workshop also filmed the experiences of the participants and can be viewed here: A Part of Me Wants to Be All of Me Video

“At the Suffolk County Correctional Facility, we have made it a priority to provide the men and women in our custody with opportunities to address their addictions, rebuild their lives, and prepare for a better future. Over the years, we have incorporated unique programs including this photography workshop, and have found that they can be tools to help someone reflect and begin to see themselves as more than their addiction,” said Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr.  

The course was constructed by volunteer photojournalist and workshop series lead Saskia Keeley, fine art photographer and creative director Maura Sullivan, facilitator, and author Camille Sweeney, along with facilitator and filmmaker Jordan Hollender.   The exhibit will be displayed throughout the month of September in the visiting lobby of the Yaphank Correctional Facility located at 200 Glover Driver, Yaphank.  

The Sheriff’s Addiction Treatment Program is a specialized program for non-violent incarcerated individuals with underlying addiction issues that led to their crimes. They participate in traditional and non-traditional recovery courses including therapy, meditation, fitness classes, writing and other programs to help overcome addiction and reenter our communities on a better path.
