Spring Interns graduated from 13-week program that gave inside look into Corrections, Deputy Sheriff Career Paths

(YAPHANK, NY) On Wednesday, April 15 Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. hosted a graduation ceremony for the 2026 Spring Sheriff’s Office interns at the Yaphank Correctional Facility. This fall, 13 interns participated in the coveted three month program, designed to give college-aged students hands-on experience of the different units and career paths in the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. Family and friends were invited to attend and celebrate the completion of the program at the graduation.

Participants toured the Correctional Facilities, Warrant Squad, Domestic Violence Bureau and Marine Bureau, while learning firsthand from officers about their daily experiences. They also had the opportunity to participate in Active Threat Scenarios, participate in a mock Legislative meeting, visit the District Attorney’s Office and take a ride along with a Deputy Sheriff to gain knowledge of patrol procedures and enforcement of traffic laws. These experiences allow young adults to work alongside officers in each area to give them a unique experience to help them to make informed choices about a career in law enforcement. Many of the interns are already in the process of pursuing a career in law enforcement or criminal justice.
