SUFFOLK SHERIFF OFFICE RECOVERS TWO GHOST GUNS IN JANUARY

Two separate incidents resulted in the seizure of illegal, non-serialized firearms

(SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY) Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. announced today that Deputy Sheriffs recovered two non-serialized firearms, commonly referred to as “ghost guns,” during two separate incidents on the same day in January. One firearm was recovered during the execution of an eviction, while the second was seized following a traffic stop that led to a foot pursuit.

“I commend these Deputy Sheriffs for their vigilance and professionalism in removing these illegal firearms from our communities,” said Sheriff Toulon. “Ghost guns are especially dangerous because they are untraceable and often linked to serious criminal activity. These recoveries are a result of good police work and our continued commitment to public safety.”

On January 8, 2026, Deputy Sheriffs were performing an eviction in Coram when they discovered a quantity of powder in small bags, a scale, $17,000 in cash and a non-serialized firearm.  The Suffolk Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Bureau Investigators later positively identified the substance as cocaine.  Craig Willie, 61 of Coram, was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell, 3rd degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 3rd degree and additional charges.

Later that same day, at approximately 11:45 PM a Deputy Sheriff attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the Town of Islip on the Service Road of Sunrise Highway after observing a vehicle going through a red light, making an improper left turn and speeding at 80mph in 35mph zone.   The driver, Justin Guerrero, 40, of Nesconset, failed to pull over and fled reaching speeds of 115mph while traveling westbound on the Service Road. Guerrero then made an unsafe lane change onto Veterans Memorial Highway, where he crashed into a FedEx tractor-trailer. He subsequently fled the scene on foot before being taken into custody following a foot pursuit.

During the investigation, Deputy Sheriffs observed signs of intoxication, including bloodshot and glassy eyes, unsteady movements, and the odor of an alcoholic beverage. A search of Guerreo’s vehicle resulted in the recovery of approximately 17 grams of cocaine, a digital scale, baggies and a non-serialized firearm.  The driver of the Fed-Ex truck was transported to South Shore Hospital for minor injuries.  Guerrero was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, First Degree, Fleeing of an Officer, 3rd degree, Criminal Possession of Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 3rd degree, and additional charges.
