SUFFOLK SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO INCREASE PATROLS FOR THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY

(SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY)—Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. is announcing increased DWI patrols for the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the highest-risk holidays of the year for alcohol related accidents.  Deputy Sheriffs will be on high alert for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs in order to keep Suffolk County roads safe.

“I want to remind residents that while Deputy Sheriffs are always on the lookout for people driving under the influence, it will be especially true this weekend. This is a holiday to spend with family and focus on what we are grateful for, not to put others at risk with impaired driving. We have zero tolerance for drunk and drugged drivers.  Stay sober, have a designated driver, call an Uber, or stay off the roads altogether,” said Sheriff Toulon.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office will be increasing patrols and participating in check points to keep our roadways safe this holiday week. In 2025, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s DWI team has already issued over 2,300 summonses and made 275 arrests this year including nearly 40 aggravated DWIs

The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the biggest drinking periods of the year.  The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is often called  “Thanksgiving Eve” or “Black Out Wednesday” and is associated with heavier social drinking which contributes to more impaired driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than one-third of all traffic fatalities during the Thanksgiving holiday period involve alcohol.
