(Yaphank, NY): On Tuesday, March 24, Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. presented 38 Deputy Sheriff recruits with their shields before their official graduation later this week.  Family and friends attended the ceremony to mark this important milestone.

“After months of intensive training, we welcome these 38 men and women who are ready to join our ranks and bring with them the skills, discipline and personal experience that continues to better the Sheriff’s Office.  The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office is a key component of Suffolk’s law enforcement network, and these officers will have vital roles in the safety of our County.  We are proud to embrace these new Deputy Sheriffs as they begin their careers and know they will work hard to do the best job they can for our residents,” said Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr.

The Deputy Sheriff recruits trained alongside the Suffolk County Police Department recruits at the Suffolk County Police Academy. This rigorous seven-month training program included instruction in firearms, emergency vehicle operations, EMT training, and individualized field training. The Deputy Sheriff recruits graduate on Thursday, March 26, alongside Suffolk Police Department and other law enforcement agencies at a ceremony at the Suffolk County Community College.

Of the 38 new Deputy Sheriffs, 19 have prior law enforcement experience, including with the NYPD and NYS Police, three are members of the military and six are dual language speakers.  Suffolk County Police Foundation was also on hand at the event to donate gun lockers to all the new Deputy Sheriffs to install to secure their firearms can be safely stored at home.
