SUFFOLK COUNTY SHERIFF ANNOUNCES PROGRESS IN 30X30 INTIATIVE

Sheriff’s Office continues outreach to encourage new female officers, support current female officers with tools to rise the ranks

(SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY) – Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. announced today progress in the Sheriff’s Office’s participation in the National 30x30 Campaign.  The campaign aims to work towards better representation of females in law enforcement, with the goal to have 30% female representation in agencies by 2030.

When the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) took the pledge in January 2024, female officers represented a fraction of all officers within the SCSO, with 16% of all SCSO sworn staff within the Corrections and Police Divisions.  In addition, there were only 14 female Correction Officers in supervisory positions and 5 female Deputy Sheriffs in supervisory positions. Since the start in 2024, the SCSO saw a 6% increase in female representation among sworn personnel, reflecting continued forward progress.  During the same period, female supervisory representation in the Corrections Division increased by nearly 29%, and the Police Division saw a 20% increase.

“The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is proud to continue our work with the 30x30 initiative.  We want the best candidates to serve and protect our facilities and communities.  Our goal is to attract people who may not have known the opportunities the job has for them as well as give our current employees the best tools and resources they need to rise in the organization and have successful and meaningful careers.”

The initiative has led to informational sessions for the public where female officers highlight the benefits of the job and potential candidates can ask candid questions. In addition to recruitment efforts, the Sheriff’s Office holds quarterly meetings with female officers – encouraging them to be mentors and role models to their peers.  The meetings have resulted in many new initiatives including new uniform items better suited to female officers, updated and cohesive parental leave informational packets for staff and other administrative projects.
