  • RIVERHEAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY LIT UP IN BLUE IN JANUARY TO RAISE AWARENESS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: January 4, 2022 (Riverhead, NY) January 2022 is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, which coincides with the Department of Homeland Security’s annual “Blue Campaign” - a national public awareness effort to educate the public to recognize the signs of victims of human trafficking. To raise awareness, the center façade of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Facility in Riverhead will be lit up in blue light throughout the month of January. Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office have embraced the Blue Campaign over the past few years. “Human trafficking is happening in Suffolk County and in communities across the country,” said Sheriff Toulon. “Most often these victims are women who are vulnerable due to a substance abuse issue and who may have had several traumatic experiences throughout their lives. It’s not uncommon for youth in the foster care system to fall victim to traffickers, but men and women from all backgrounds can become victims.” Sheriff Toulon started The Sheriff’s Anti-Trafficking Initiative Unit in 2018 - the first of its kind in the country operating from inside a correctional facility. The principal objective is to ensure that all victims of human trafficking who pass through the Suffolk County Correctional Facility are identified and have access to the services they need to recover. Additionally, they are supported throughout their long-term journey as survivors with the help of the S.T.A.R.T. Resource Center on the grounds of the Yaphank Jail, and through many non-profit service providers partnered with the Sheriff’s Office. Since inception, S.A.T.I. has conducted over 2700 inmate interviews, identified 239 human trafficking victims and identified 148 perpetrators. Criminal investigations against these traffickers are coordinated with local, state, and federal partners working with the Suffolk County Anti-Trafficking Initiative. ###

  • ELF ON THE SHELF UPDATE

December 23, 2021 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (Riverhead, NY) As Christmas approaches, friends and colleagues of the Elf on the Shelf rallied in front of the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverhead for his release. The Elf on the Shelf is currently being held without bail at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility for allegedly causing mayhem across Suffolk County. He is charged with Attempting to Distract the Sheriff from his Duties and 439 counts of Silly Mischief in the 3rd Degree. Some of those protesting included Frosty the Snowman, Comet the Reindeer, a Nutcracker who preferred to remain nameless, and an elf named Hermie. Frosty was the most vocal of the group, constantly yelling “Send him home!” and strangely, “Happy Birthday!” every time the wind blew his hat off and Comet put it back on. The Nutcracker, who appeared to be in a branch of the military, held a sign stating, “Put the Elf back on the Shelf!” When asked to comment, he opened his mouth and closed it a few times but never said anything. Comet the Reindeer spoke highly of the Elf on the Shelf’s case. “My brother in law, Rudolph R. Reindeer, Esq. is representing him. I am confident that these ridiculous charges will be dropped and he will be back home for Christmas. Finally, Hermie the Elf really missed his friend. “I realize that the Elf on the Shelf can be a bit messy- he and I shared a dorm room in college. But who doesn’t make a mess now and then?” Sheriff Toulon could not speak about the case, but said the Elf on the Shelf seems to be trying to behave in the Jail. “He mostly sits there motionless looking sweet and innocent. But once, when the Correction Officer left to conduct a supervisory tour of the rest of the tier, he wrapped toilet paper around the bars and threw his pencils in the sink.” The Elf on the Shelf has a court appearance today at 2:00 P.M.

  • ELF ON THE SHELF ARRESTED FOR ACTS OF MISCHIEF

Caught Causing Mayhem Across Suffolk County FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: December 21, 2021 (Riverhead, NY) Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. announced today that the Elf on the Shelf has been arrested and is currently incarcerated in the Suffolk County Correctional Facility. Suffolk County residents have been posting photos to social media of the Elf allegedly destroying kitchen countertops, making messes in bathrooms, and swinging from dining room chandeliers. These acts of mayhem have been occurring since the beginning of December. Today, the Elf was caught in the act attempting to refile important paperwork in the wrong cabinets in Sheriff Toulon’s office. He was charged with Attempting to Distract the Sheriff from his Duties and 439 counts of Silly Mischief in the 3rd Degree. Sheriff Toulon explained how difficult of an arrest this was to make. “Everyone knows that you can’t touch the Elf on the Shelf. Deputies making the arrest had to ask the Elf to apply the handcuffs to himself. He then was transported to the jail in the glove compartment so he couldn’t slip out the window. The Elf is now under COVID-19 quarantine for 14 days and has been issued two tiny face masks.” It has not been determined whether or not this Elf found in Sheriff Toulon’s office is the same Elf accused of the mischief occurring in households throughout the county. When questioned by investigators, the Elf just stared back with a blank stare and refused to speak or move. However, when the investigators left the interrogation room and returned a few minutes later, the Elf had spilled coffee all over the table and was sitting on the top of the door frame. He will be placed under constant observation. The Elf has already retained legal counsel, a Mr. Rudolph R. Reindeer, Esq. Mr. Reindeer stated, “This poor elf has been framed. He was just trying to help children follow the rules and be good boys and girls before Christmas. He is employed at the North Pole and reports back to his employer, Mr. Chris Kringle, about whether or not the children have been behaving. Why would he misbehave himself?” A court date has yet to be determined. For more information, and to follow this case, visit the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter

  • Halloween Safety Tips from Sheriff Toulon

With Halloween this weekend, Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. would like to urge everyone to exercise some extra caution while driving and make safety a top priority so that all children can enjoy the day. “Parents and guardians are so busy these days, and sometimes people are more rushed than usual around the holidays. Please drive safely and use extra caution while driving in neighborhoods where kids are trick-or-treating. If you have a party to attend where you may have a few drinks, plan ahead and make sure you have a designated driver,” said Sheriff Toulon. Here are some tips to keep in mind on Halloween: o Ensure that your children have a flashlight, glow stick, or a reflector to make them visible to drivers. o Plan ahead and know your child’s route. You should know where your child is at all times. If you have young children, they should always be accompanied by an adult, and make sure they have your phone number and home address just in case they get separated or lost. o Children should be advised to walk on the left side of the road facing traffic, and always walk on the sidewalk if one is available. o Unfortunately, children need to be aware of potential danger when they are trick-or-treating. Check the Parents for Megan’s Law website so that you and your children know which houses they must avoid while out trick-or-treating. The web address is: www.parentsformeganslaw.org o All children should know that they should never enter a home or vehicle of someone they don’t know. o It is best to accompany children to the doors of all homes while they are trick-or-treating. o Finally, make sure that costumes fit properly and don’t unnecessarily restrict their vision. #Halloween2021 #SCSO #SuffolkSheriff
