IT HAPPENS ONLY ONCE A YEAR Tour the Inside of the County Correctional Facility on September 22nd
(Yaphank, NY) Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. is encouraging the public to come out to the Sheriff’s Annual OPEN HOUSE AND FAMILY DAY on Sunday, September 22nd from 11 am – 3 pm at the Yaphank Jail located at 200 Glover Drive in Yaphank. The event features its popular jail tours throughout the day for ages 12 and up, exciting demonstrations by the Emergency Response Team and K9s, and free activities all day long. It will be held rain or shine.
“The Open House event is a unique opportunity for the public to get a realistic look inside a jail and to get a better understanding of the role of the Sheriff’s Office in society,” said Sheriff Toulon. He added, “We had over 2000 people attend last year, and since it’s free, it’s a nice Sunday afternoon outing for residents and families.”
In addition to the featured jail tours, there will be many exhibits, law enforcement demonstrations, a “Troop Carrier” truck ride, Operation Safe-Child ID Cards, live DJ music, a buggy obstacle course and bounce house, a scavenger hunt, aquatic robot, snacks, food trucks, giveaways, games and interactive sports like Tug-of-War, and much more. This year, the NY Rangers Street Hockey Program will also be set up in the parking lot so kids can practice in the ring. No equipment is required. Suffolk County Girl Scouts will be able to earn a special Patch at the event, and Boy Scouts will also be able to earn their Crime Prevention Merit Badge.
The event will also feature information and demonstrations on the Sheriff’s Project Lifesaver Program. This initiative features a tracking device for individuals with autism and cognitive impairments that can help locate them in the event they ever go missing. The County Sheriff’s Office warmly welcomes any caregivers and their family members to the Open House to learn more.
