Inmate Demographics

Suffolk County, New York is home to more than 1.4 million people (US Census Bureau, Census.gov).  Since taking office as the Sheriff of Suffolk County, Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. has made it a priority to stay in constant communication with the surrounding communities, engage with the local youth, and increase positive communication and relationships between law enforcement officers and those that live within Suffolk County. Sheriff Toulon has been shifting the focus of the Suffolk County Correctional Facilities to a rehabilitation-based approach in an attempt to help inmates transition from a jail setting to re-entering our communities. Our goal is to give inmates access to the proper care, programs. and support systems they need in order to be successful, productive members of our communities. Upon release, the hope is that they will put the information, tools, and supports they have been provided with to use, and be able to integrate themselves back into our communities, breaking the criminogenic cycle(s) that they have been trapped in.

Sheriff Toulon is proud of the men and women of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and the work that they do on a daily basis. In an effort to continue to have honest, open lines of communication between the SCSO and the surrounding communities, Sheriff Toulon would like to make inmate demographic information available to the public, which will be updated on a weekly basis. The information provided will include: daily jail population number; total number of inmates housed in the Riverhead and Yaphank facilities, respectively; jail population by gender; jail population by age and gender; jail population by race; jail population by ethnicity; number of sentenced inmates (termers) by gender; number of inmates housed out by location; number of inmates sentenced and unsentenced; top ten towns by recorded residence; top ten holding charges.  This information is being displayed on our website in order to provide transparency to the people of Suffolk County with regard to the demographics of the inmates that make up the population of the Suffolk County Correctional Facilities.
